美日安保條約全名爲《日美安全保障條約》（Treaty of Security and Safeguard Between Japan and United States），是日本與美國於1951年9月8日在舊金山美國陸軍第六軍司令部簽訂的軍事同盟條約。該條約第五條規定，各締約國宣誓在日本國施政的領域下，如果任何一方受到武力攻擊，依照本國憲法的規定和手續，採取行動對付共同的危險。

奧巴馬對日本報紙表示，爭端應該通過對話和外交手段解決，而不是通過威嚇和強制手段（Disputes need to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, not intimidation and coercion）。對此，中方發言人表示，中國對釣魚島擁有無可爭辯的主權（indisputable sovereignty），美方應尊重事實（respect facts），以負責任的態度（take a responsible attitude），恪守在有關領土主權問題上不選邊站隊的承諾（remain committed to not taking sides on territory and sovereignty issues），謹言慎行（speak and act cautiously），切實爲地區和平穩定發揮建設性作用（earnestly play a constructive role in regional peace and stability）。
