Carry a torch的字面意思是“高舉火炬”，比喻爲“單戀，喜歡”或“執着某一事業或理想”的意思。如果表示單戀，喜歡某人或某物，執着於某一具體的事業或理想，在短語後面用解詞for，後面再接名詞或動名詞短語，即：carry a torch for something or doing something。
