茶話會第451期:對她言聽計從

1. She has the ear of the company's chairman.
The company's chairman指的是公司的董事長。這裏有個短語：Have the ear of someone，If you have the ear of someone, they listen to you and respect your opinions and advice.如果說你have the ear of someone擁有別人的耳朵，實際上是指別人聽你的話、尊重你的看法和建議。She is only a secretary,but she has a good deal of power because she has the ear of the company's chairman.她雖是祕書（secretary），卻擁有很大權力（has a good deal of power），因爲公司董事長對她言聽計從。
2. I nearly jumped out of my skin when a hand grabbed me in the dark.
對於這個例句我真是深有體會。那是去年的萬聖節，我在世界之窗，路上有一些人扮作鬼魂，在背後突然抓我頭髮，可把人嚇死了。當時我的感覺就是jump out of my skin，If you jump out of your skin, you are extremely shocked or startled.這個短語字面上來理解就是從皮囊中跳出來了，可謂嚇得魂都沒有了，所以呢短語用來表示感到大吃一驚、被嚇了一大跳。I nearly jumped out of my skin when a hand grabbed me in the dark. 黑暗中有一隻手把我抓住，可真把我嚇了一大跳。The sudden explosion made her jump out of her skin. 突如其來的爆炸把她給嚇了一大跳。
3. This book will give the students a firm grasp of English grammar.
Firm grasp字面上來理解就是緊緊地抓牢，firm是“緊緊的”意思，grasp抓住。你可以說She felt a firm grasp on her arm. 意思就是她感到手臂被緊緊地抓住了。這個短語還有隱身含義：Having a firm grasp means having control over a situation or extensive knowledge of a subject.表示對某一情況或者知識較好地掌握。This book will give the students a firm grasp of English grammar. 就是說：這本書將使學生牢固地掌握英語語法。
