forlorn hope 敢死隊

【講解】

此語來自荷蘭的軍事用語verloren hoop在 荷蘭語中是“敢死隊”，相當於英語lost troop。verloren hoop是在16世紀進人英語的,到了丨7世紀以後verloren和hoop被英國人分別誤爲與其發音有點相似的英語詞， forlorn和hoop相聯繫而演變成forlorn hope這一形式,意義也隨之發生了變化，轉而表示“孤注一擲的行動,渺茫的希望,絕少成功希望的企圖”等意,在語言學中forlorn hope 一語往往被用作民俗語源（folk etymo-ogy)的一個典型例子。
