     Last week at a dinner party, the hostess asked me to sit next to old. Mrs. Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress. She did not even look up when I took my seat beside her. Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating. I tried to make conversation.
‘A new play is coming to “The Globe” soon,’I said. ‘Will you be seeing it?’
‘No,’she answered.
‘Will you be spending your holidays abroad this year?’I asked.
‘No,’she answered.
‘Will you be staying in England?’I asked.
‘No,’she answered.
   In despair, I asked her whether she was enjoying her dinner.
‘Young man, ’she answered,‘if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner!’

    在上星期的一次宴會上, 女主人安排我坐在蘭伯爾德夫人的身旁. 蘭伯爾德夫人是一位身材高大、表情嚴肅的女人, 穿一件緊身的黑衣服. 當我在她身旁坐下來的時候, 她甚至連頭都沒有擡一下. 她的眼睛盯着自己的盤子, 不一會兒就忙着吃起來了. 我試圖找個話題和她聊聊.
   “一出新劇要來‘環球劇場’上演了, “我說, “您去看嗎?”
   “不, “她回答. “您今年去國外度假嗎?” 我又問.
   “不, “她回答.
   “您就呆在英國嗎?” 我問.
   “不, “她回答.
    失望之中我問她飯是否吃得滿意.
   “年輕人, “她回答說, “如果你多吃點, 少說點, 我們兩個都會吃得好的!”

1、Last week at a dinner party, the hostess asked me to sit next to old.
next to:be adjacent to 與...爲鄰
注意：have  dinner不加 “a” , 而“at a dinner party” 中的“a” 並不修飾 “dinner” 而是 “party”

2、Mrs. Rumbold was a large, unsmiling lady in a tight black dress.
large：指體積，形容人表示個子大
in （a tight black dress）：穿着...

3、Her eyes were fixed on her plate and in a short time, she was busy eating.
one's eyes are fixed on sth.:眼睛盯着...（=fix one's eyes on sth.）
in a short time：不一會
be busy doing sth.:忙於做...

4、A new play is coming to “The Globe” soon
The Globe （theater）：環球劇場,位於London的Thames旁

虛擬語氣用法

對現在的情況作出假設，所假設的情況和現在的事實相反
應用方式：If引導的條件從句中用v.的過去式，如果從句中v.爲be動詞，則第一/三人稱後用were；主句用would+v.原形
=>'if you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner!'
 （If引導的條件從句中用v.的過去式，表達了和事實相反的情況；主句用would+v.原形）

=>If you saw him now you wouldn't recognize him.
 （If引導的條件從句中用v.的過去式；主句用wouldn't(否定形態)+v.原形）

=>Would he get annoyed if I told him about it?
 （if I told him about it是一種虛擬的假設，表達了和事實相反的情況）

=>If I were you, I would probably tell him the truth.
 （If引導的條件從句中v.爲be動詞，則第一/三人稱後用were；主句用would+v.原形）

=>If it were not for you, I wouldn't do this.
 （If引導的條件從句中v.爲be動詞，第三人稱it後用were；主句用would+v.原形）

對過去的情況作出假設，所假設的情況和過去的事實相反
應用方式：If引導的條件從句中v.爲過去完成時態，主句用would/could+v.的現在完成時態
=>If I had known that, I wouldn't have supported him.
 
=>He could have come if his car had not broken down on the road.

=>It would have been different if you had helped.
