Bottleneck是一個英語複合名詞，本義是瓶子頸部，但在商務英語裏，常用“瓶頸；阻礙；妨礙進度的因素”之義，同近義詞有barrier，block，chokepoint。Bottleneck常見的習慣用語有bottleneck constraints瓶頸制約/限制、bottleneck problem瓶頸問題、double bottleneck雙重瓶頸、development bottleneck發展瓶頸。

企業瓶頸其實就是一種危機（crisis）。企業遭遇到發展瓶頸（development bottleneck），意味着企業在某階段上不去下不來，長時間出現停滯（be at a standstill）或者反覆波動的現象。企業苦苦探索變革之道，但事倍功半（get half the result with twice the effort），導致變革成本不斷上升。

如果企業一直無法突破瓶頸（fail to break through bottleneck），最終可能會被不斷變化的市場所淘汰（will be eliminated by the changing market）。
