Speculator = specul-（來自拉丁語specere，看）+ -ator（名詞詞尾，人），即觀察的人，思索的人，引申爲“投機者、思索者”。買低賣高的尋利行爲就是投機（speculation）。
商業領域裏，常見的speculator有property speculator房地產投機商、real estate speculator炒房者、exchange speculator外匯投機者、international speculator國際投機商。
