Laughing matter是指“無關緊要的事情，開玩笑的事情”。但是no laughing matter相當於not a laughing matter，意思是指“此事不可言笑”“此事非兒戲，是正經事”。這個俚語用來告誡對方請嚴肅地看待事情和所發生的問題，因爲它是不能隨意可以開玩笑或鬧着玩的。
