Explosive goes off Japans Yasukuni shrine

Police closed a large section of Japan’s controversial Yasukuni Shrine on Monday and began a manhunt for a figure captured on security camera after a suspected explosive device detonated in a public lavatory.

No injuries were reported from the blast, which police at the scene told reporters had burned walls and left a hole in the roof.

Initial findings suggested that the explosion was non-accidental and had been caused by a timed device. Police were reported by Japanese media as saying that plastic tubing, batteries, wires and four iron bars had been found at the scene.

Police are investigating footage from a security camera that appeared to show a man with a paper bag near the public lavatory a few minutes before the blast.

Japanese media also reported police speculation that the blast may have been a “copycat incident” inspired by recent extremist violence in Europe.

The war shrine has, in the past, been a focus of both nationalist and left-wing Japanese activism. It is also a flashpoint in regional relations: China and Korea view Yasukuni as a symbol of Japan’s failure to adequately acknowledge and apologise for historic atrocities inflicted on its neighbours.

As dozens of police and bomb specialists conducted their investigation on Monday, hundreds of visitors continued to enter and leave the sprawling Yasukuni compound to pay their respects at the main shrine, where 14 Class A war criminals are included among the 2.5m Japanese war dead commemorated here.

The shrine was busier than normal because Monday is a public holiday in Japan and Yasukuni was hosting the annual “First Fruit Festival”. As a precaution, the shrine authorities said that they had cancelled events involving children.
