The second-largest holder of voting shares in Viacom has urged Sumner Redstone’s media group to sell a stake in its Paramount film studio to Jack Ma’s Alibaba to generate new funds and smooth the way for it to produce more films in China.

擁有維亞康姆(Viacom)第二大投票權的股東敦促雷石東(Sumner Redstone)的這家媒體集團把所持派拉蒙(Paramount)電影製片公司的部分股權出售給馬雲(Jack Ma)的阿里巴巴(Alibaba)，以便獲得新資金併爲該公司在中國製作更多電影鋪平道路。

“If Alibaba is going to be serious about getting into the entertainment industry Viacom should sell Jack Ma a piece of Paramount,” said Mario Gabelli, whose Gamco owns 10 per cent of the voting shares — second only to Mr Redstone’s National Amusements company.

“如果阿里巴巴對於進入娛樂產業是認真的，那麼維亞康姆應當把派拉蒙的部分股權賣給馬雲，”馬里奧加貝利(Mario Gabelli)說。他旗下的Gamco在維亞康姆擁有10%的投票權，僅次於雷石東的National Amusements公司。

Alibaba Pictures, the Chinese group’s entertainment arm, invested in Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation this year and was the official partner for the film’s launch in China. Mr Gabelli said Viacom and Alibaba would benefit from a closer relationship. “Jack Ma has a great understanding of the Chinese movie market.”

Mr Gabelli also told the Financial Times that Viacom’s board should have provided more disclosure about the mental and physical condition of Mr Redstone, the largest shareholder of Viacom and CBS, the US broadcast network owner, and the executive chairman of both companies.

Concerns about Mr Redstone’s health and ability to continue in his chairman role have intensified since a lawsuit was filed last week by Manuela Herzer, his former companion.

Mr Redstone, 92, has not been seen in public for several months and has stopped speaking on Viacom earnings calls. In the claim, Ms Herzer alleged that Mr Redstone’s cognitive abilities had been “decimated” since mid-2014, when he suffered a bout of pneumonia.
