The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health.

我們所吃的食物似乎對我們的健康有深遠的影響。

Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat.

儘管科學上已取得許多進展，使食物更適合我們食用，但與此同時它也使許多食物不宜食用了。

Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon. Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery.

In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things in the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

In the State of Zheng. There was a man who wanted to go into town to buy a pair of new shoes.

鄭國，有個人想去城裏買一雙新鞋子。

Before leaving home, he measured his foot with a piece of straw for size. After he arrived at the town and entered a shoe shop, he put his hand into his pocket only to find that in his haste he had left the measurement at home. Thereupon, he turned round and started for home. But when he rushed back to the shoeshop with the measurement, the shop had closed. As a result, he had busied himself for nothing.

他離家前先用一根稻草量了自己的腳，把他當作尺碼。他到了城裏，走進鞋店，伸手摸口袋，從發現因爲急着趕路，把尺碼忘在家裏了。於是，他轉身就往家裏跑。可是等他拿着尺碼趕回鞋店的時候，店已經關門了。結果，他白忙了一陣子，還是沒有買到鞋子。

Later, someone asked him:” Were you buying shoes for yourself or for others? ”

後來，有人問他：“你是給自己買鞋，還是給別人買鞋?”

He answered:” For myself.”

Someone else asked him:” Don’t you have your feet on yourself? You need only to Try on shoes with your feet to get the right size. Why did you go back home to fetch the measurement? “

One day, seated in the ancestral hall, King Hui of Liang saw a man leading an ox pass by. He asked. “Where are you taking the ox?”

梁惠王坐在廟堂上，看到堂下有一個人牽着一頭牛走過，便問道： “你把牛牽到哪裏啊?”

The man leading the ox stopped and answered:

牽牛的人停了下來回答說：

“I am taking it to be slaughtered and will use its blood to paint the bell.” As king Hui heard this, he felt pity for the ox and said:

“我要把這頭牛牽去殺掉，用它的血來塗鍾。”惠王聽了，便對牛十分憐憫，說：

“How can that be done? You are too cruel. Let it go at once. It is not guilty. How can you kill it? I cannot bear to see it panistricken, shedding tears and trembling before its death. ”

“那怎麼行呢!你們太殘忍了，趕快把牛放掉。它沒有罪，怎麼能殺掉呢?我不忍心看到牛臨死前恐懼、流淚、戰慄的樣子。”

The man leading the ox asked:

牽牛的人問道：

“Do you mean that I shall let the ox go and not paint the bell? Is that it?”

惠王回答說：“您的意思是要我把牛放了，不必再塗鍾了，是嗎?”

King Hui answered: “What are you saying? How can you not paint the bell! Let the ox go, but use a sheep instead.

“你在說什麼?鍾怎麼能不塗呢!把牛放了，換隻羊吧。”
