辨析 acknowledge&admit
acknowledge 是一個正式用語,比 admit 更加正式一點。
acknowledge 是承認事情的存在或者發生,但我們不一定能看出承認者的態度到底如何。
admit 往往帶有“不情願地承認”某件事情的存在或發生,尤其是這是一件不好的件事情。所以當我們聽到有人admit什麼的時候,第一感覺是他出了問題,所以“承認錯誤或失誤”。
Jim's team acknowledged their defeat.
Jim 隊接受輸了的事實。(但是他們可能並不服輸。)
Jim's team admitted their defeat.
Jim 隊承認他們輸了。(不情願或是不得不承認。)
→Jim's team admitted their defeat, but they didn't acknowledge it. 認輸但是不服輸。
